After weeks of suspense, plots and backstabbing, Celebrity Traitors has reached a nail-biting finale
Spoiler alert - This article reveals details from The Celebrity Traitors finale
Over the course of the show, viewers witnessed murders, double-crosses, intense glares, and a memorable moment that pierced all suspense.
Yet on the final evening, the final winner of the first celebrity edition was revealed.
From nineteen participants, just a handful remained: Deceivers and loyal players facing off for the prize.
Soon, the field narrowed to just three: the remaining contestants.
Ultimately, comedian Alan Carr was crowned the champion, in a surprising outcome that broke the internet and left him emotional.
"This has been destroying me, I'm so sorry," he exclaimed, admitting to the remaining faithfuls that he was actually one of the deceivers. "I'm an awful human being."
"You did brilliantly," they consoled him. "Everything's fine."
Social media quickly erupted with this development. "Most awful traitor ever being the best traitor ever," wrote one user.
"There could not have been a better conclusion," wrote another, while someone else described it as "the TV moment of the year."
The organization he selected, a cancer charity, gets to keep all the prize money, with the total amount reaching eighty-seven thousand five hundred pounds.
The comedian's evolution from giggle liability to cold-hearted killer was one of the standout highlights of the series.
However, his victory still left the nation surprised, according to industry observers.
"The idea of Alan, of all people, pulling off an expert performance in deception felt just as probable as him keeping composure through one of his own punchlines."
During follow-up conversations, the other contestants summed up why no one had ever really suspected him.
"He might have come down to breakfast in traitor attire and I still wouldn't have thought he was deceiving us. I was too busy laughing," a player said.
"Most people didn't target him because how does one eliminate a person so loveable?" questioned a different contestant.
The winner stated he had "thoroughly enjoyed" his experience with the program.
"I want to do it again... I doubt it would work a second time!"
The final episode was lengthened to over an hour on television. It had a different start than usual, as all the celebs were aware who'd make it at the breakfast table.
Viewers heard some very uplifting, and atypical for the show soundtrack, as the episode revisited some moments from every remaining player's experience in the game.
As ever, Alan Carr gave us some of the most memorable lines.
"Let's face it, I began the competition as something of a nervous wreck. I've betrayed some really good friends to save myself, I've eliminated national treasures openly. I'm clearly more deceptive and player than I believed."
Meanwhile, another contestant commented that reaching the conclusion was "way more stressful than competing with a national team", while another said he was "totally surprised" to have lasted this long.
Early on of the finale, various contestants appeared to be attempting to become the new style icon of the competition, taking over from the previously eliminated style leader.
Carr emerged at the morning meal resembling a 1950s US chat show host in a checked maroon suit, later switching into a bejewelled white suit.
However, he got outstyled by a fellow player's burgundy formal wear. Impressive style.
Next up was the competition, with the remaining contestants boarding a locomotive called - of course - The Deceivers' Railway.
The challenge involved destroying portraits of eliminated players. Have sympathy for a player who was hit in the head multiple times by the lid of a substantial container.
Soon after, it was time for the elimination discussion.
The deceivers did a pinky promise beforehand, vowing to support each other. "We've progressed significantly, I'm not going to betray him," said a player, while the other simply laughed.
And one did stick to their agreement. But, managing to stay unnoticed for the majority of the competition, their partner still received the majority elimination votes.
The remaining traitor appeared to be experiencing significant distress to be the last traitor standing. "Now I'm on my own, I'm frightened," he said. "I'm unpredictable, a rudderless ship."
Online platforms and onlookers were equally disappointed.
"I did NOT want this contestant to be banished. A truly loveable traitor," said an observer.
"You will forever be remembered in Traitors history," posted another user.
But there was little opportunity to dwell on their elimination. Before long, the game reached the final stage - this being what we were really all here for.
The last players stood over the ceremonial fire. Meanwhile, the partnership broke down, just when it was most crucial, in a truly WTF moment.
A player was eliminated in dramatic fashion - after a shock vote from their ally, who betrayed them.
"It hurts to be betrayed at the final moment like that," remarked the eliminated player. Later, it was revealed that when they message, the betrayed player refers to their former ally as a traitor.
Finally, just three players remained in the game: the final trio.
A contestant, looking incredibly smug, chose to conclude the game. So did a different player, and everything depended on the third, who made the identical choice - resulting in the traitor emerged victorious.
According to commentators, the scene where the other players consoled the winner was "beautiful TV". "I anticipate it could be a contender for outstanding scene at television honors," they commented.
Happily, the winner quickly regained composure from his bout of tears, and could finally appreciate his victory.
"What a rollercoaster. I was awful at lying, I had no poker face and here I am a winner," the winner said.
And he even joked about that infamous murder - his close ally during the initial stages - by leaning toward the host in the final scene and making contact.
"There's something on your face," he said, with his trademark giggle.
The recent episodes of famous people scheming, plotting and sometimes surprising incidents may feel like one big crazy jumbled dream. But it really did occur. And we will miss it.
